Advanced techniques to improve language learning
TPRS® or Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling® was developed in the late 1980s by Spanish teacher Blaine Ray. This is a language teaching method based on the idea that the brain needs a huge amount of comprehensible input (CI) to learn a new language. It also creates opportunities for teachers and students to interact and for students to speak and try out new languages, leading to rapid progress in language proficiency. In fact, some TPRS online courses are now reaching students in just 60-100 hours, when it normally takes
00-600 hours. TPRS focuses on the use of interactive, co-authored narratives, readings, and novels that incorporate the most commonly used words and phrases in Spanish, French, German, or other foreign languages to help students helps you learn and become familiar with a new language easily and quickly. In developing the
TPRS®, Ray influenced Dr. Stephen Krashen and Dr. James Usher. Ray began combining Dr. Usher's teaching method called Total Physical Response with Dr. Krashen's CI-based language acquisition strategy. The result is a teaching methodology that focuses on the importance of teacher-student interaction. Use CI and stories to keep learners interested in becoming proficient in a new language.
